Jesus in the New Testament

as the one whose cross triumphs (Col 2:14-15) over principalities and powers (see #'s 1, 2, 3, below).....(new covenant vs old covenant.... Law done away?)

  • 1) the commandments and doctrines of men Col 2:22; Col 2:8

  • 2) our sins (which have killed us) Col 2:13

  • 3) the "ministration of death: (2Co 3:7) also called the "ministration of condemnation" (2Co 3:9) and "that which is done away" (2Co 3:11) and "nailing it to his cross" (Col 2:14) and a vail that was blinding the minds of Jews reading the Old Testament (2Co 3:14) -- i.e. a "vail is upon their heart" (2Co 3:15), and a vail that "shall be taken away"(2Co 3:16), a "schoolmaster to bring us to Christ" (Gal 3:24), something which did not have the power to bring life (Gal 3:21) or righteousness (Rom 10:4-6, Gal 3:5-6, Rom 4:8-11, Gal 2:16-20; Gal 3:11-14), the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, that was contrary to us (Col 2:14)

  • Commentary: The whole picture is that the LAW must be written in our hearts --- that what was done away with was the idea that you are rewarded proportionally to your law-keeping abilities [this IS what the Jews thought] : ........ the old covenant -- the schoolmaster -- the "all that the LORD hath spoken we will do" (Exo 19:8)...........is done away with, but the principles of the law are forever (Psa 111:8) and now are kept (2Co 3:3) by the Spirit in us ! [For if sin still exists (and it does.... 1Ti 5:20; 1Ti 5:22) then the LAW itself must still exist (1Jn 3:4, Rom 7:7) and therefore could not be that which was "done away" or "taken away".] What was nailed to the cross, is what was always nailed to Roman crosses (which all the people 2000 years ago understood) and that was a listing of the crimes committed ("Lawbreaker")... therefore, what was nailed to the cross was the accusation of "Lawbreaker" -- the "writ of debt" against us (hence the fact that we deserve death -- i.e. the "curse of the Law" Gal 3:13) for the crimes (Lawbreaking) we have committed. He took this real fact (that we are "LawBreakers") and forgave us (Col 2:13) , an blotted (Col 2:14) this fact out by the new fact that His cross provided the way for us to be "LawKeepers" ..... i.e. justified and sanctified through the New Covenant .... a covenant not based on man's promise to "do good" (Exo 19:8) but based on the "better promises" (Heb 8:6) that Jesus has already "done good" [paid sins penalty by His own death on the cross, --- paid our penalty of "LawBreaker" Gal 3:13, Heb 9:26; Heb 9:28; Heb 9:12] and He gifts to us this thing that He has worked out (Rom 5:15-18, Rom 6:23, 2Co 9:15, Eph 2:8, Eph 4:7, Heb 6:4, 1Pe 4:10). Furthermore, if a covenant is ratified (put into legal standing) by the death of the covenant maker (Heb 9:16-17) and afterwards can't be changed (Gal 3:15) then how could the 4th commandment be "annulled" (speaking in the vernacular of Gal 3:15) unless Jesus Himself did so before His death..... which obviously He didn't because even in death, He "rested" on the Sabbath and all His associates (men and women) knew nothing of such a change [which Jesus would by Gal 3:15 have had to make BEFORE His death..... like adding the Communion Service and Foot Washing] and were careful the keep the Sabbath the day after His death. (Paul also knew nothing of a so-called change in the covenant because he kept at least 78 and more Sabbaths -- Act 18:4; Act 18:11 compare Act 25:8). Thus we see by the actions of the people who were contemporary with Jesus, that the Law isn't what was nailed to the cross for they kept ALL the law (in the Spirit --- by the New Covenant promise of the Spirit writing that law in their hearts and dwelling within the believer, making him a new creature) including the Sabbath.

    Colossians 2:14-15

14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

    Colossians 2:22

22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?

    Colossians 2:8

8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

    Colossians 2:13

    13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

    2 Corinthians 3:7

7 But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:

    2 Corinthians 3:9

9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.

    2 Corinthians 3:11

11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.

    Colossians 2:14

    14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

    2 Corinthians 3:14

14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.

    2 Corinthians 3:15

15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.

    2 Corinthians 3:16

16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.

    Galatians 3:24

24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

    Galatians 3:21

21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.

    Romans 10:4-6

4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. 5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. 6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)

    Galatians 3:5-6

5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.

    Romans 4:8-11

8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. 9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. 10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. 11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:

    Galatians 2:16-20

16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. 17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. 18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. 19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. 20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

    Galatians 3:11-14

11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. 12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

    Exodus 19:8

8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD.

    Psalms 111:8

8 They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.

    2 Corinthians 3:3

3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

    1 Timothy 5:20

20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

    1 Timothy 5:22

22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure.

    1 John 3:4

4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

    Romans 7:7

7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

    Galatians 3:13

13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

    Hebrews 8:6

6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

    Hebrews 9:26

26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

    Hebrews 9:12

12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

    Romans 5:15-18

15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. 16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. 17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) 18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

    Romans 6:23

23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    2 Corinthians 9:15

15 Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.

    Ephesians 2:8

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

    Ephesians 4:7

7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

    Hebrews 6:4

4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

    1 Peter 4:10

10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

    Hebrews 9:16-17

16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.

    Acts 25:8

8 While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all.
